WoV #6: Dörthagen

Sixth battle of the Wolf of Vengeance campaign.

After battling the Undead in the Moot, Rhobar decides to head to Dörthagen: all the hints found in Hugo's house lead there, so it's the natural place to go.

Dörthagen

Briefing

When you reach the village of Dörthagen, you, Rhobar, find it teared down to pieces. The borough stands on the border between Reikland and Talabecland, just where the trenches of the violent civil war lied. Here, the Imperial artillery brought destruction to the houses and the streets, and you really consider the tragedy of the war. You remember being around here during your period as a soldier, under Heinderich's command; now, Dörthagen is a pile of rubble, where probably wander scattered warbands of deserters and Sigmar only knows how worse creatures.

You and your men walk wary throughout the village to the centre of the town, where the map found in Hugo's hut signs. Every corner, every window could conceal an ambush: you're ready to face it. And ready you must be, for suddenly a shot echoes in the air and a madman armed with an enormous morning star rises screaming at you with bad intentions...

Empire vs Empire. Skirmish

The armies

The good ones

Empire Team

Rhobar has the same troops he had in the Moot, so a versatile little contingent of Empire troops: Spearmen and Halberdiers, some Crossbowmen, two Knights (one is Rhobar's second in command, Von Horrocks), an Outrider and Rhobar himself.

The bad ones

Bandit/Deserter Team

A similar warband confronts Rhobar in the streets: some men escaped from the war, ex soldiers or ex convicts now turned into bandits. They're intention is to kill Rhobar and his men to rob them of their gear, but they won't risk everything to achieve that. Some Free Company Militia and other State Troops, a couple of Imperial Archers and Handgunners; the bandit chief is a Pistolier, and with him there are a couple of Adventurers (represented in game with the same profile as a Witch Hunter). Lastly, a mad Flagellant fights with the bandits, his mind lost due to the horrors he had to behold...

The game

The game begins! Rhobar as already cleared the streets and split his men on the two sides of the road. The bandits attack both contingents, and lean on the rubbles of the wall in the centre. The tower on the opposite side of the battlefield is the location marked by the map

On the left, Rhobar and his men confront the bandits between the walls of a cemetery

The scrum is harsh

Von Horrocks, Rhobar's lieutenant, is ready to jump out from the destroyed wall and attack the bandit chief. Some ancient Dwarven statues mark the story of this ancient town

The gods of battle seem to be smiling at our hero: the bandits are retreating at the wall! But you notice something odd: your enemies won't go near the ruined tower... there's something obscure on that side of the square. A powerful force arises from the darkness

The bandits are trying to flee, but again they're trying to go far away from the tower! Some of them defend the ruined gate, while Von Horrocks goes directly to the bandit chief! His charge is effective, and the opponent tries to escape... and his desperate route brings him just near the tower...

Here there was an epic scene which deserves a little digression... some wonderful pics were made!

Hans thought: "I can reach him". He prepared his crossbow, trustful companion for all his years in the State Troops. He had one chance, just one. A brief prayer to Ulric, God of Thunder, Master of Winter: may your cold breeze guide my quarrel to the target. He aimed. He shot.

Without a sound, the bandit chief fell from the horse, hit while running away by the precise missile of the Imperial man. One shot, one kill. Hans smiles while taking cover behind the railing: blessed be Ulric!

Just when the enemy cavalryman passes near the tower, a growl is heard from beneath the ruins. And then, something horrible exits the tower. They were Imperial soldiers once: their livery is still visible, even if it's melted to their skin. They were humans: now there's nothing human in what emerges from there. A savage pile of muscles, tentacles, veins and diseased skin attacks everything in sight, thirsty in blood and massacre

The story

"What are these things?". This is the only thing you can think while ordering to your men to convey to the wall to regroup and attack. The mutated soldiers are tearing into pieces the bandits, while some of them try to escape and hide in the streets. Is a harsh fight, but you and your soldiers eventually manage to kill the five creatures. The deserters knew they where hiding under the tower, and that was the reason of their attempt to avoid coming near it. But you feel that these are not just the effects of some accidental exposure to Chaos.

The lair of the mutated soldiers is the place to go. It's a filthy and narrow tunnel under the rubbles, but you manage to find what apparently you were looking for: an artifact that you recognise as the missing eighth object from Hugo's house. Now the set is complete, you have all the Eight Secrets. But what for? In the book there isn't any advice about how to use them and how they're "incredible power" can be unleashed. They're just eight random things, not beautiful weapons, not even useful tools. But the secrecy around the map, the location and the books found in the Moot means that there's something you're missing. You just don't know where to find it yet.

Before leaving Dörthagen, you and Von Horrocks examine the bodies of the mutated soldiers. And here you see something: their livery has a drawing that you recently noticed, the same coat-of-arms you can see on the gloves of the young nobleman of the drawing found in Hugo's house, the one with the adventurers. Von Horrocks, a nobleman himself, remembers the heraldry: it's from the city of Pfungzig, in the Averland, not far from here and on the border with the Moot. You're search is on: if you want to discover something new about the Eight Secrets, Pfungzig is the place to go.
